Western North Carolina is an amazing location for those looking to explore the beauty of the Appalachian region. Towering high above this majestic landscape is Grandfather Mountain, with an elevation of almost 6,000 feet.
A Scenic Drive to the Top of North CarolinaLocated along The Blueridge Parkway, this is one of the tallest peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A donation of $20 per vehicle grants the visitor with access to the top. Grandfather Mountain is now operated as a non-profit, with proceeds going to its upkeep. This very reasonable fee includes an audio cd that provides commentary on the sites you will experience along the way.
You may want to start at the bottom with the Grandfather Mountain Nature Museum and work your way up. The winding drive features multiple pull-offs at some very photogenic overlooks. About halfway up, you can stop for lunch at Mildred's Grill, and have the chance to view bears in The Wild Life Habitat just down the pathway.
As you continue upward, you will encounter the "Forest Gump Curve", as seen during the cross-country run in the 1994 film. As the story goes, Tom Hanks' brother was scheduled to double as Gump in the scene, but at the last minute Hanks himself showed up to the surprise of the locals.
Once you approach the summit, you will have the option of the upper or lower parking lots. The upper is directly across from the giftshop, while the lower provides access to a hiking trail that brings you to the same destination along a more scenic pathway. The main attraction here is of course, The Mile High Swinging Bridge. This popular suspension bridge was constructed in 1952, and spans 228 feet across the 80 foot chasm below.
If you are feeling extra adventurous, there is a more lengthy trail just north of the giftshop that will take you to Macrae Peak (0.9 miles) and on further to Calloway Peak (2.7 miles) for some even more stunning views. This trail is rated difficult, so be prepared.
This awesome outdoor adventure is sure to be enjoyed by the entire family, and is a great way to spend the day while road tripping through Western North Carolina. If you get an early enough start, you may even be able to squeeze in a visit to nearby Linville Caverns.
Due to Covid19, tickets must now be purchased in advance online.
