Although Luxembourg is a representative democracy, it incorporates the rule of a constitutional monarch as its head. This makes it the only sovereign Grand Duchy still remaining. It is also one of the founding members of the European Union, and entirely landlocked between the borders of Belgium, France, and Germany.
But how did this tiny (yet successful) nation come to be?
Over a thousand years ago a new settlement was constructed atop of an old Roman cliff-side fortification presently referred to as the Rocher du Bock. Rulers of this new territory would eventually rise to power within what was left of the Holy Roman Empire. In the year 963 Count Siegfried built his castle here, which would lead to the founding of Luxembourg City. It would eventually fall into the hands of the Habsburgs and become involved in a series of conflicts and border disputes before the establishment of NATO and the EU.

The interior section of this stronghold is called the Casemates du Bock. If you venture inside you will be able to explore the archaeological crypt that showcases the inner workings of the city's defense system.
From the top of this mighty cliff you can also see the lower section of town which is divided by the Alzette River. This vantage point gives you an amazing view of the very picturesque Neumünster Abbey down below.

The original abbey was destroyed in 1684 during The Siege of Luxembourg, it was rebuilt with construction beginning in 1688 and completed in 1720. Though this structure was intended as a place of worship, over the ages it has served as everything from a prison and barracks to an orphanage.
Let's head back toward the town center and search for even more historic places of interest. The seat of power in Luxembourg now rests within the Grand Ducal Palace, which dates back to the 1700s. If you arrive at just the right time you may even get to witness the changing of the guards.

While in the area, you should also pay a visit to Charlotte, Luxembourg's favorite Duchess. Forced into exile during World War 2, the Grand Ducal Family would re-establish Luxembourg's government from abroad. Upon her return she had become a successful diplomat credited with enhancing the international image of her homeland.

While in town, you may also want to have a look at the Cathedral Notre-Dame. Construction on this church began in the 1600s. By the late 1800s it would be elevated to its cathedral status. The exterior provides an example of late gothic architecture while the interior houses the crypts of the Grand Ducal Family.

After a long day out on the town you definitely will be looking for somewhere to relax and grab a bite to eat. At the Place d'Armes you will have the option of many restaurants and cafes circled around a large pavilion and a monument to the poets Dicks and Lentz.

Travel Tip:

If you plan on arriving by train, the central station is located just a few blocks southeast of the Pont Adolphe bridge. If you arrive on a tour bus, you will find that many of those park in this area as well. Walking across this bridge will give you the best view of the city skyline.
Luxembourg City is absolutely packed with
history, culture, and scenic views.
