Situated at the intersection of two of the Flanders Region's rivers, Ghent has a history that dates back to the Stone Age. This settlement would later experience conflict between the Romans and Franks, and continue to thrive all the way through the Dark Ages up to modern times. These important waterways would eventually be incorporated into the city's canal system which we see today, providing for a convenient means of transportation and shipping. These canals can bee seen in the photos below as well as a view of the Saint Michael's Bridge leading to the Saint Michael's Church (1400s).

The Middle Ages were a period of extreme growth and abundance, with the population exploding to over 50,000 residents by the 1300s. During this time Ghent became one of the more prominent cities in Europe, despite having been the victim of many wars and raids. Strength through adversity has seemed to be a motivating force for Ghent, as can be seen in the amazing architecture found all over town.

The Gothic-styled City Hall was constructed in the 1500s to meet the needs of this bustling environment. Look closely and you will notice ts facade displays statues of the Counts of Flanders. Just south of here you will find the Belfry of Ghent (1300s). This enormous bell tower once served as a lookout and provided warning notifications to the public.

If tales of conflict and turmoil are of your interest, you will definitely want to make your way over to Gravensteen Castle. The current version of this mighty stronghold was constructed in the 1100s, but its origins date back much further to the 9th century. Over the years it has served as everything from a prison to a factory, but now it acts as a museum showcasing the the town's interesting history.

Speaking of architecture, you will definitely want to have a look at the elaborate religious structures of Ghent. The St. Nicholas' Cathedral (1300s) was constructed on the site of a former Romanesque church that once stood on these grounds. Just a coulple blocks to the east you will find Saint Bavo's Cathedral (1200s) which was also a replacement for an earlier wooden chapel that dated back to the 10th century. These are only two of the many historic churches you will find scattered around the area, so keep exploring.

Travel Tips
If you are visiting Ghent, you will most likely roll into town by bus or train. The greater area of the town is spread over many square miles, but all of the sites I highlighted are found in the heart of the old city which provides an easily walk-able stroll through history.
I only visited this amazing place for a brief amount of time, but I recommend spending at least a couple of days to fully experience the interesting history and amazing sights that Ghent has to offer.
