Quite possibly the most picturesque tow in all of Belgium, Dinant provides for an amazing amount of photo opportunities . . . This Website Contains Affiliate Links Dinant is located in the Namur Province along the Meuse River in the French speaking Wallonia Region of Belgium. That mouth full of locales may seem awfully specific, but that is exactly what gives this charming tow its distinct culture in comparison to the rest of the country. Though this town may seem quiet and picturesque, it has been the site of much conflict throughout the ages. A young Charles DeGualle was injured here while serving in the French army during World War I. By the time of World War II, another wave of attacks would devastate the land. DeGualle would eventually rise to political prominence, and the bridge in the above photo now carries his name. The statue? You guessed it … that's him. One thing you cant go without noticing in this town is the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Dinant. This 13th century Gothic cathedral towers over everything, and if you think the exterior is impressive ... the inside will leave you equally amazed. This is actually the second church to be built on this site. The original Romanesque structure was destroyed when a part of the cliff collapsed claiming the lives of over 30 people. The misfortune didn't end there, as the new church would need further reconstruction at the end of each World War. Near the cathedral you will find a cable car that takes you to the top of the cliff to explore the 11th century citadel that was constructed to protect this section of the Meuse River Valley. Of course you could go on foot and take the 400 steps if you fee so inclined. But there is much more to Dinant than just death, destruction, and warfare. This charming place has lots to offer. Its biggest claim to fame is being the hometown of Adolphe Sax, and take a wild guess what he is the inventor of ... By the early 1840s Mr. Sax was hard at work perfecting the instrument for which he is known. Though similar types of valve horn had previously been developed, it was Sax who was behind the modern day version we are all familiar with. If you find this interesting, you can visit the home of Adolphe Sax which functions as a museum. After a long day of sightseeing you can rest up a bit by exploring the nice variety of local pubs and restaurants that line the riverfront promenade. I recommend relaxing with a glass of Leffe. This is a local beer that has been brewed in the area for hundreds of years, and you absolutely must try it. I only briefly passed through this gem of a town, but to fully immerse yourself into the the sights Dinant has to offer you should be prepared spend at least one night here … maybe two.
