It is no secret that Knoxville, Tennessee hosts an amazing assortment of activities to be enjoyed by the entire family. The Ijams Nature Center is just one, providing a relaxing hiking experience not too far from the downtown area.

Adventuring Through an East Tennessee Nature Reserve

Ijams Nature Center can be a bit tricky to find, but is well worth the effort. Google maps is probably the best way to get directions to this off the beaten path park. When you first arrive, you will immediately notice the visitor center from the parking lot. Inside you will find a giftshop for those looking for the perfect souvenir for what is guaranteed to be an awesome day of exploring East Tennessee's natural beauty. I advise to stop here for a quick restroom break and be sure to also grab a map of the grounds - you'll need it.

I hope you picked up that map, because Ijams contains over 12 miles of hiking trails spanning over 300 acres. There are seemingly endless pathways that loop around to an assortment of interesting places. This place is fun to explore, but can be a bit confusing at times. I recommend starting at the visitor center and makin your way up North Cove to the Discovery Trails.

Throughout this nature reserve, you will be treated to a variety of environments including wooded ridges and hidden ponds. Keep on trekking and you will eventually make your way down to the banks of the Tennessee River.

One of the main attractions at Ijams Nature Center is the River Boardwalk. This amazing wooden pathway takes the visitor on a leisurely stroll along the rocky cliffs of the river.
Warning: At the time of my last visit, the trail to the boardwalk had been damaged in a landslide. It was currently under repair, but should be open soon.

If the trail is still out during your visit, you can still access the board walk by taking the Tower Trail, but the full loop may not yet be possible.

Along this spectacular boardwalk, you will encounter many more amazing photo opportunities. This interesting rock fold at the top of the staircase seems to beckon visitors to stop for a quick pose.
If you continue along the river trail, you will make a right and eventually find yourself back at Island Home Avenue. At this point you can the road and enter into the Mead's Quarry area. This part of the reserve also has a parking lot, so you may want to continue the loop to your vehicle and relocate for convenience.

The area surrounding the historic Mead's Quarry, is far more expansive than the original reserve. There are many more trails to be explored here, so once again - that map will come in handy. The Tharp Trace trail makes a one mile loop around the quarry, and is rated fairly difficult in comparison to the others. Along the upper side you will have the chance to pay your respects at the historic Stanton Cemetery.

If you explore the area near the train tracks, you just might find the ruins of an old limestone kiln that was once used in calcium production. On the other side of the tracks there is another series of interconnecting pathways providing for potentially hours of exploration. Most of these trails are rated moderate, and include many twists and turns to keep you busy.
One of the most interesting concepts you will find along these trails is the Primal Playground. It is exactly what it sounds like, an exercise place fit for a caveman. This is a great place to get a quick workout, as you climb around on a natural jungle gym or stack some pretty hefty looking boulders that have been pulled from this very site. Don't hurt yourself!

Once you have had enough trekking out on the trails, the quarry also has a kayak rental so that you can continue exploring by water. At only $15 an hour, this is an incredibly relaxing way to wind down after having explored such an amazing place.

Like I mentioned before, the Ijams Nature Reserve is enormous. There is no way you will cover all of this in one day. Start at the visitor center and carefully plan your day accordingly. This is guaranteed to be an adventure that will keep you coming back time and time again.
