Day trip to a windmill village in the beautiful countryside of Holland where you will find wooden shoes and flavorful treats ... This Website Contains Affiliate Links Windmills have long been an iconic symbol of this region of the Netherlands, and the village of Zaanse Schans is an amazing way to experience this aspect of Holland's culture. There is no entrance fee to the village, and you can wander the many pathways to explore the area as you wish. Let's take a look! Located north of Amsterdam, this attraction makes an excellent day trip adventure. It functions as a large open-air museum with the windmills as its main attraction. There are a total of seven of these large wooden contraptions, each performing its own job. Fore a small admission fee, you can gain access to the windmill of your choosing to see the inner workings. Along the way you will learn how some are designed to work as sawmills, while others perform tasks such as grinding. But there is much more to enjoy other than just windmills. Along the way you can visit the dairy farm to learn all about cheese production. Here you will also receive a free tasting of the local flavors including my favorites, pesto and truffle. You can then purchase a multitude of products that are available. Another interesting attraction you will find here is the wooden clog workshop. Inside you will be educated on the art of wooden shoe making including its history. If you catch it at just the right time you will even be treated to a live demonstration of the process. Many styles and sizes are on display, in case you decide that this is the type of footwear for you. You will also find souvenir shops along with dining options and snacks at Zaanse Schans. One thing I must warn you about is the restrooms. They cost one Euro and only accept plastic, so make sure you have a card on you ... the line can also be a bit long. Best way to travel !!! RailEurope In the video below, you can follow me as I explore this amazing windmill adventure. To visit Zaanse Schans, you can easily take the train from Amsterdam Centraal Station. There are local companies that offer this as part of a larger tour, but if you want to fully immerse yourself into every thing this place has to offer, I suggest going on you own to set your pace as you see fit.
