Have you ever wondered what it, would be like to visit multiple countries in one day? I often thought how adventurous it would be to have breakfast in one remote town, lunch across the border, and then follow it up with an evening drink in yet another thrilling location. While visiting the Catalonia region of Spain, I made that experience happen. Here is how it was easily accomplished.
A Quick Trip Through Spain, France, and AndorraI normally don't spend my adventures roaming around with groups of tourists. I am usually more of a solo traveler that would rather venture off alone, but I could not pass up a chance to visit "Three Countries in One Day". This tour was hosted by an amazing group called Explore Catalunya. Departing from Barcelona, we would be crossing from Spain, to France, and finally into the tiny country of Andorra . . . Spain and the Village of BagaThe first stop was for breakfast in the 900 year old Spanish village of Bagà. After grabbing a cup of coffee and a pastry, we strolled around this medieval town hearing all about its local history. This included some very fascinating tales of the town's ancient struggles with raiders. There was very little activity along the pathway, as we meandered our way through town. The buildings look to be so suspended in time that it is not hard to imagine the previous inhabitants going about their daily business. One thing I found especially interesting is that upon closer examination, each residence is marked with the family's surname instead of a number.
The historical vibe is absolutely amazing in this village. Unfortunately, I was on a time restricted tour. There seems to be a number of wonderful smelling bakeries, as well as pubs where one could hear more of those fascinating tales. I would love to one day return and explore the town much more thoroughly.
Onward to FranceA little further north we crossed the border into the southern region of France. The borders in the European Union are now as simple as passing a sign that says welcome to France, so don't expect to gain a passport stamp. The mountain surrounded town of Ax-les-Thermes was our next point of interest. It is here that two rivers, L'Oriege and L'Ariege, converge over a geothermal spring that is pumped into basins around the city. Within this picturesque landscape we would have a few options for lunch, along with the chance to soak our feet in the soothing hot water, while exploring this beautiful town.
While wandering the alleyways, I could not resist the urge to sample some of the local wines. This was my first time in France, so I wanted to experience as much of the culture as possible. I soon found out that what little French that I had remembered from high school was no match for the real world. It was a slight challenge, but many of the locals seem to be experienced in dealing with English speaking tourists.
Ax-les-Thermes is a very laid back kind of town. This is especially true if you visit on a Sunday. Many businesses may be closed or have reduced hours of operation, but you are still guaranteed to have a relaxing time. Across the Pyrenees MountainsWith its highest altitude at over 11,000 feet, The Pyrenees Mountain Range is an amazing natural wonder to behold. This winding road took us on a path up and down though a variety of scenery ranging from lush green fields to snow covered peaks, as well as a multitude of breath taking photo opportunities. We eventually passed through a checkpoint where we had the chance to acquire our very own Andorra passport stamp. Andorra Awaits
After a scenic drive through the Pyrenees Mountains, we were soon making our last stop in the cozy little town of Andorra la Vella. Here we had time to explore the streets for a bit. While some were taking advantage of the duty free shopping, I chose to relax and have a couple of drinks at the local tapas bars.
Look around and you may notice some pretty creative works of art incorporated into the landscape. Many of these types of art are created by the careful placement of natural materials such as rocks. The image seen on the nearby hillside is of a refugee carrying a child. It was also here in the downtown area that I photographed the melting clock sculpture "Noblesse du Temps" which is an obvious tribute to the surreal art of Salvador Dali.
This tour is an excellent way to pack in as much adventure as possible into one day. Based in the heart of Barcelona, the wonderful people at Explore Catalunya are experts at providing this type of service. I highly recommend considering them when planning your Catalonia excursions.

Hello. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. This tour was one that I booked on Expedia, so I was at the mercy of a guide. When I do this type of adventure on my own I usually have everything researched in advance. Some of my more recent travel guide posts are of day trips in which I pack as much in as I can in a short amount of time.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
