A Look at the History and Beauty of Catalonia's Sacred Mountain

It was during my trip to Barcelona that I decided to venture northwest toward the rocky slopes of Montserrat. I began this journey at the Placa d'Espanya metro station where a package deal can be bought that includes your train ticket and entrance fee. You will have two options for the second part of the trip, each departing from a different location. Upon arrival at the base of the mountain, you will either take the funicular or the cable car (which I chose) as you ascend around 4,000 ft above sea level.

The word Montserrat means "serrated mountain", and you can easily see why that name was chosen by the jagged ridge that crests the top. From the bottom it is hard to imagine that there could be much to this remote upward location, but the world above will surely impress. Upon arrival you will find amenities including a restaurant, giftshop, and a museum. There are also a couple of hotels and a hostel on site.

Despite all the touristy comforts, the most important part of this mountain village is its spiritual aspect. Montserrat has long been a religious center for the Catalonia region. The original monastery was constructed in the 11th century and was granted basilica status in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII. Its primary purpose has long been to house the statue of the Madonna entitled Our Lady of Montserrat. You may also here this effigy referred to as The Black Virgin, as its complexion has darkened over the ages.

The numerous dedicated followers that live in the abbey are part of the Order of Saint Benedict. It is said that these Benedictine Monks are experts at wine making, and inside you may have the opportunity to sample their tasty creation (for religious purposes only of course). The lines can be long to get in, so plan accordingly.
One thing you'll definitely be amazed with is the intricate decor. The church's facade was constructed by diocesan architect Francisco de Paula, and incorporates statues sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana i Barbany and his brother Venanci.

Rather than stand in line, I opted to spend my time exploring the other areas. If you missed out on that wine tasting, you may have the chance to pick up a bottle at the gift shop. In the same building also resides the Santa Maria restaurant. Here you can grab a buffet dinner to help fuel up for the rest of the day. The seating offers a great view, but just outside an observation platform will treat you to an ultimate experience of the natural surroundings and astonishing architecture.
There is far more to do than just marvel at the sights. You will also have the opportunity to burn off a few of the calories you just consumed by over-indulging in paella at the restaurant I told you about. Hiking is one of the big appeals to this place, as footpaths meander all around those massive peaks. Something interesting awaits around each corner. Along the way you may encounter various shrines and statues that only add to the ancient vibe. Get out there and enjoy!

One day is simply not enough time to thoroughly explore the majesty of Montserrat. I recommend either getting the earliest start possible or maybe even spending the night in one of those convenient lodging options found at the apex of this amazing mountainous environment.
